Are you going to Ukraine? Be sure to take out travel insurance!

If you have long dreamed of visiting the jewel in the crown of Eastern Europe, travel to Ukraine , don’t pigeon-hole your trip due to a pandemic or for whatever reason. The country is open to foreign citizens from all over the world under the sole condition: you should have travel insurance.

When planning Ukraine travel, you can be sure that you can get wants and needs met in this country.  For example, you can see 7 architectural masterpieces that are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and admire the unique beauty of the Carpathian Mountains. Or you are welcome to walk the ancient streets of Kyiv, visit the places where the majestic Ukrainian Cossacks originate. Taste and fall in love for life with fragrant borsch with cured pork fat and potatoes dumpling.

However, the safety matter always stays behind the romance of any travel, so tourists are often interested in is Ukraine safe? Sure, it is safe, if you are scrupulous about the handling of the documents required, familiarise yourself with the epidemiological situation in advance, study the rules of stay in a particular territory of the state and be sure to make medical insurance.

What is insurance for?

Travel insurance for Ukraine is a compulsory condition for visiting the country for foreign citizens and temporary residence permit holders. It shall be issued by a company having a representative office registered in Ukraine, or by a company that is an official partner of the Ukrainian insurance company.

The need to purchase an insurance policy has increased exponentially, primarily due to the situation with COVID-19 in the Ukraine. At the same time, it is important not only to have travel insurance in Ukraine for the entire period of stay, which covers the costs of SARS-CoV-2 treatment and observation, but also a certificate of vaccination. You should be vaccinated with at least one dose of the vaccine approved by the World Health Organization. As of today, these are:

  • Pfizer / BioNTech;
  • AstraZeneca / Vaxzevria;
  • AstraZeneca / Covishield;
  • AstraZeneca / SKBio;
  • Moderna / Spikevax;
  • Sinopharm (Vero Cell);
  • CoronaVac (Sinovac);
  • Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen.

If you are not vaccinated, you may have:

  • negative PCR test that was done no more than 72 hours before entry to Ukraine;
  • negative antigen test that was done no more than 72 hours before entry to Ukraine.

Self-isolation is required for certain categories of tourists for a specified period. So if you travel to Ukraine and have spent more than 7 of the last 14 days in India or the Russian Federation, you shall undergo self-isolation for 2 weeks without the possibility of early termination based on a negative antigen test or PCR. To do this, install the Vdoma mobile application.

Even though most of the territory of the state is safe to visit, some tourists are still worried about whether Ukraine is safe to visit, and what are the obstacles to an easy-going vacation? In Ukraine, as in any other country, no one is insured against petty theft. It is important to realise that there is no need to walk at night, especially alone, to districts located on the skirts of the cities, industrial zones, and other places that are unfavorable from the point of view of personal safety.

Extreme weather conditions can also significantly spoil travel to Ukraine, and in mountainous areas, bad weather can generally become a threat to health and life. Therefore, study the weather reports in advance, go on hiking trips over rough terrain, and be exclusively accompanied by an experienced instructor.

Some tourists are wondering if Ukraine is safe, especially in the Chernobyl area? The level of radiation in certain areas remains high even though over 35 years have passed since the explosion of the reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Not all places are allowed to visit. And in general, a special permit may be required to travel to the exclusion zone. In any case, you cannot predict how your body will react when faced with radiation at any dose. Therefore, you should think about Ukraine travel insurance in advance.

There are two more territories where a foreigner shall not travel: the eastern part of Ukraine, where a military conflict has been taking place since 2014, and the temporarily occupied Crimea peninsula. When planning to travel to Ukraine, in particular to these and even nearby regions, think about a well-prepared insurance policy that includes not only health impairment situations, but also the risks of kidnapping, as well as other dangerous scenarios.
