A virtual tour of the Hampshire Vaccine Hub to support people with learning disabilities and anxiety

A series of photos and videos have been put together to explain what a trip to the four vaccine centers in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (including the site of St. James Infirmary in Portsmouth) will look like.

Tours created by the Solent NHS Trust and the Portsmouth Disability Charity Enable Activity can be viewed multiple times, allowing viewers to become accustomed to the environment before visiting.

Ian Chalcroft, Solent’s Integrated Learning Disability Services Manager, explained why it is important for people with learning disabilities to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

“Messages, advice and rules need to be easy to understand or explain,” he said.

“We knew how important it was to get vaccinated, as people with learning disabilities are six times more likely to die of Covid-19.

“Therefore, I am really pleased to have the opportunity to develop a clear communication resource on vaccination, including a’virtual tour’. We hope this will become the standard for opening the building to the public. “

A movie guide was created as part of the virtual tour. JoBall is a senior occupational therapist who guides visits using accessible languages. Macaton sign language is also used.

Jon Muller, Chairman of EnableAbility, added: ‘EnableAbility is proud to contribute to the incredible national effort to vaccinate everyone with Covid-19.

“Our What’s It Like service provides special communication tools to help people with anxiety disorders access places and services. To prepare people with learning disabilities to get vaccinated. We are excited to see it help. “
