After a record season, the revolution faces NYCFC in the playoffs

The pursuit of the first MLS Cup by Carles Hill and Topseed’s New England Revolution begins in earnest when hosting four-seeded New York City FC in the semifinals of the Eastern Conference in Foxborough, Massachusetts on Tuesday night. ..

New England has secured the first ever Supporters’ Shield after a record-breaking regular season. Revolution broke numerous league records, including 73 MLS records at most points of the regular season.

Revolution, who is about to return to the MLS Cup final for the first time since 2014 when he fell to the Los Angeles Galaxy coached by Bruce Arena, begins his journey in the playoffs.

“This year was a great season and I think all this kind of pressure is good for me,” said Gil, who was named MLS Comeback Player of the Year after leading the league with 18 assists. “Yes, I know there will be a difficult match (Tuesday) with a very good team, but I’ve been training hard and ready for the last three weeks.”

Last season’s postseason, Revolution went to the conference finals, bowing to Columbus Crew, the final champion of the arena’s first season as a coach and sporting director in New England.

The 70-year-old Arena set a fourth record for the MLS Sigi Schmid Coach of the Year on Monday after linking the legendary Schmid with 240 in the league’s most regular season win.

“Maybe thirty years ago I knew everything. Today I realized I didn’t know, so that’s certainly a big change,” said the arena. “But I’ve changed. I think I’m a little more patient than before. But it was a great experience because I enjoyed coaching every way.”

New York City FC are aiming to maintain their momentum by defeating Atlanta United FC 2-0 in the first round of playoffs on November 21st.

Valentin Castellanos, the winner of the MLS Golden Boot, scored the first ever MLS Cup playoff goal in the 49th minute, and Alexander Karenth scored the final victory goal in New York four minutes later.

After defeating Atlanta, New York will have eight days off between matches. Revolution, on the other hand, fights a 22-day break and can delay the start on the field.

“They spend a lot of time preparing for the playoffs and they are a really good soccer team,” said New York coach Ronny Deila. “(Their breaks) aren’t in my heart right now. It’s the best we can, and then we’re going to play a good game.”

Neither defender Anton Tinnerholm (Achilles tendon rupture) nor midfielder Keaton Parks (lower body injury) can play against New York.

New York is 6-9-4 in a full-time series against New England. This season, Revolution won two of the team’s three meetings. New England defeated New York 2-1 in the team’s latest match at Foxborough on September 11.
