John Arthur Bonnet was a meat wholesaler who worked for a company called Sancinena, a meat company based near the Guild Hall.
Sancinena supplied Argentine meat to various parts of the South, including the Savoey Restaurant in South Sea.
On August 15, 1949, John delivered meat for dinner and dance at the Savoey Restaurant to celebrate the 1948-9 championship victory.
The dance was attended by all players and club officials, so John asked for all players’ signatures rather than paying for the order.
The football stars agreed and signed John’s celebration and seating plans.
This item has become a family treasure and has been handed over to other football enthusiasts.
Michael Conven, a member of the association, said:
“It’s important to remember that Pompeii was simply the largest and best team at the time.
‘Signs were provided to him with a festive menu and seating chart created in the evening.
“He then received this and he kept it and cherished it.
“This item was handed over from John to his daughter and from her to his son William Conven. William Conven is also a lifelong fan of Portsmouth.”
Michael said the experience of interviewing fans of this era was “just a fascinating experience.”
“It was really nice and privileged to hear how they got to the ground, the atmosphere they experienced at Fratton Park, and how they met the players and got their autographs.”
The Pompey History Society is a non-profit organization run by supporters and recognized by the club.
