Thousands of children attacked by teachers cause chaos today as schools are closed

Thousands of children across Britain are at home today as teachers attack nearby schools.

The strike, the first of five this summer, was masterminded by the National Education Union (NEU) amid a salary dispute.

Thousands of parents were forced out of work as labor unrest caused chaos.

Teachers will also leave the office on May 2, followed by a three-day strike from late June to early July.

These strikes threaten to disrupt GCSE and A level students due to classroom exams in May and June.

Meanwhile, most schools in Northern Ireland were closed yesterday as all five education unions, including NAHT representatives, participated.

Only schools in England and Northern Ireland will be affected by the strike.

NEU Co-Secretary-General Dr Mary Bousted said in a statement:

“It will only get worse.”

A one-off payment of £1,000 from the government this year and an average price increase of 4.5% for staff next year have been condemned as ‘insulting’ and dismissed by NEU, ASCL, NASUWT and NAHT.

Last week, the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) announced that for the first time in its history, England would hold a formal vote for nationwide strike action.

If successful, strike action coordinated between teachers and principals could lead to the largest series of strikes on record.

A Department of Education spokesman (DfE) said: “Any strike action would be very damaging.

“We have offered fair and reasonable compensation in recognition of the hard work and dedication of our teachers.

“Next year, school funding will be at an all-time high, thanks to the additional £2 billion we are investing in schools.”
