UK weather: Brits hit by flood warnings after 87mph winds & showers batter country overnight before Storm Agnes clears

BRITS have been hit with flood warnings after Storm Agnes battered the UK overnight.

This week saw travel disruption and power outages hit Britain for days as the first named storm of the season swept across the country.

And the chaos is set to continue, with flooding expected to cause trouble for thousands.

Forecasters first believe today will bring “sunny spells for most” as the storm clears.

The Met Office predicted: “Early morning rain soon clearing southeast. A bright and breezy day, with plenty of sunny spells for most.

“A scattering of showers in the north and west, these most frequent across Scotland, where it will also be windy.”

But it’s not all good news – as tonight heavy showers will hit, and flood warnings are in place for England, Scotland and Wales.

Experts predict local coastal and tidal flooding is possible on the River Wye estuary in Gloucestershire on Saturday, some parts of the North West and South West coasts of England on Saturday and Sunday, and for the North East coast of England on Saturday.

Land, roads and some properties may flood and there may be travel disruption.

It comes after Storm Agnes triggered a series of Met Office yellow weather warnings for wind and rain across the UK, with forecasts of damaging winds and big stormy seas.

In Co Derry, Northern Ireland, firefighters had to rescue a woman after her car became submerged in Storm Agnes flood waters.

The car was carried around 20 metres as the woman drove close to a rapidly rising river.
