Ellie Kemper apologizes for joining the Debutante Ball with a “racist” past

Actress Ellie Kemper apologized for joining the Debutante Ball as a teenager, saying the event had “arguably a racist, sexist, and elitist past.” Stated.

Kemper, best known for his work in the television series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, was 19 years old when he starred in the Baled Prophet Ball in St. Louis, Missouri in 1999.

The 41-year-old is reportedly selected as the “Queen of Love and Beauty” after noticing that she is at the center of Twitter’s viral debate over the ball.

According to The Atlantic magazine, the event was founded in 1878 by a wealthy white elite and banned blacks and Jews from participating.

Kemper made a long apology on Instagram, not knowing about the history of the ball, but said that “ignorance is no excuse.”

She wrote: “I decided to join a local debutante ball at the age of 19. I doubt this 100-year-old organization that hosted the debutante ball. There was no racist, sexist, or elitist past.

“At that time I didn’t know this history, but ignorance is no excuse. I was old enough to educate myself before joining. I clearly stated white supremacy. Lament, blame, reject.

“At the same time, I admit that I am the beneficiary of a system that distributes unequal justice and unequal rewards for my race and privileges.”

Kemper, who starred in the sitcom “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” played Erin Hannon in the American version of The Office.

She states: “I strongly believe in the value of kindness, honesty and inclusiveness.

“I’m trying to live my life according to these values. If my experience shows that organizations and institutions with these unbelievable pasts have to take responsibility, I’m This experience must be taken positively.

“I would like to apologize to those who were disappointed. I promise to move forward. I listen, educate myself, and have a better society that we believe we can achieve. I promise to use my privileges to assist. “

Twitter user @WB_Baskerville, who tweeted the ball debate late last month, responded to Kemper’s apology on Monday.

They posted: “I decided to accept Erie’s apology. Everyone should leave her alone now.”
