Firefighters deal with Burnhamway Lower Sydenham scrap yard fire

Some 60 firefighters assembled at the Burnham Way site shortly after 3pm today (May 22).

Seven tons of scrap metal are currently being unloaded at the scrapyard.

Residents have been urged by firefighters to keep windows and doors closed due to the thick smoke.

The brigade’s 999 control room received 27 calls of a fire.

Forest Hill, Beckenham and Lewisham Fire Brigade BromleyLee Green, and surrounding stations will participate.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

A spokesman for the London Fire Department said: “Eight fire engines and about 60 firefighters were involved in a fire at a scrapyard on Burnham Way in Lower Sydenham.”

“About 7 tons of scrap metal are being burned in scrapyards.

“It was a highly visible fire, and the Brigade’s 999 control room received 27 calls warning of the fire.

“Because of the thick smoke, locals are advised to keep windows and doors closed.

“The brigade was called up at 15:01 and is still on the scene. Beckenham, Forest Hill Fire Brigade LewishamBromley Station, Lee Green Station and surrounding stations will participate.

“At this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown.”
