Despite real efforts at UK companies to improve board diversity, the number of white men in the “Top 40” positions of the FTSE 100 companies is actually increasing.

Eleven people from other ethnic minorities play these roles, accounting for only 3.5%. This is another ethnic minority individual since the analysis began in 2014. In other words, it takes 216 years for ethnic minorities to be proportionally represented (13%) at the top three levels. Gender diversity has been a concern over the last two years as the number of female leaders in the top 40 pipelines stagnated between 2018 and 2019, with the proportion of women rising from 28.9% in 2019 to 2021. It has dropped to 28%. Gender diversity at the pipeline level has declined since 2019, according to an eight-sector analysis of the 14 sectors. Consumer goods (31%), technology (27.2%) and industry (13.9%) are all less diverse than in 2014. White men make up the top 65.8%. It increased from 63.8% in 2019 to 40 roles.
