There was a new demand for the plan to be resumed as the pressure on living expenses continues to hurt households.

In response to a written parliamentary question, Ms. Hargay said:

“I would like to resume the plan, and I was assured by the Minister of Finance that I had the funds available to do this, but this requires executive approval.

“I am deeply dissatisfied with the lack of a functioning executive that has prevented the resumption of this important support scheme.”

An estimated 200,000 to 300,000 households in Northern Ireland suffer from fuel poverty, according to Community Department officials.

UUP MLA Andy Allen said it was “unacceptable” that the absence of executives hindered the allocation of funds.

He doubts whether the fuel payment scheme can be resumed through the “internal easement” of department spending.

SDLP MLA Mark H. Darkan told Belfast Telegraph that the original plan “had significantly underestimated the need for assistance.”

He said the Democratic Unionist Party’s decision to destroy executives was “extremely regrettable” and urged the party to “think about the damage they are causing.”
