Images and details of what the new Avanti West Coast train will look like when operators launch a £ 117m upgrade to the famous Pendolino fleet are revealed.

Operating services between cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool, the company will transform all 56 trains with the UK’s largest fleet upgrade.

With over 270 million miles since its launch, Pendolino is considered the UK’s most hard-working train fleet and has served the West Coast main line for almost 20 years. The upgrade will return the vehicle to a “like new” condition.

Phil Whittingham, Managing Director of Avanti West Coast, said:

According to Avanti, customer improvements include:

  • 25,000 standard class seat replacement
  • Each of the 35 11 Pendolinos transforms one first class vehicle to provide over 2,000 additional standard class seats.
  • Introducing the new cafe bar
  • Improved lighting and new interior carpet
  • More use of technology with customer-friendly passenger information screens
  • Additional luggage space
  • PowerPoint for all seats
  • Refurbished toilet

The first train, set number 390125, will be relaunched in late 2021.

The upgrade program will run until February 2024, when the last fleet is expected to leave Widnes.
