Interview with Lou Hater: Synth-pop star shining debut album Private Sunshine doing alone

Lou’s debut album, Private Sunshine, released today on the legendary label Skint, is a brilliant culmination of her career path to date, working with Jean from Air from behind the Mercury Prize-nominated New Young Pony Club key. “It definitely evolved in a nice way,” Lou told Daily Star about the flowering writing and recording process of Private Sunshine.

“I’m more happy than I expected. Spending that time actually gave me the best results.

“I wanted to release it many years ago, but I’ve had all the experience of releasing other singles on my New Sins project with Tomorrow’s World and Jean Benoeto on Air. I think it helped my solo record get stronger.

“Before the release, I got the best results I’ve ever had.”

Private Sunshine is an ardent statement of intent from artists who are ready to rock pop after 2021.

Daily Star’s Rory McKeown spoke to Lou about the creation of Private Sunshine, its influence, her evolution as an artist, and the direction of her next work.

Regarding Private Sunshine’s creative process, Luhater said:

Hello, Lou. how are you? How was last year? How have you overcome the pandemic as an artist?

“At first I think my brain or creativity was completely stopped. I couldn’t do much. After the first shock, after the situation regained some calm, I started writing again. I started writing again. Has actually written music that is therapeutic and suitable for focus. It gives you a great focus.

“I had a lot of work to do to release this album. It was great. I completed the artwork and did that kind of thing. For the last six months I’ve been doing it every day. I was overwhelmed by this work. It’s amazing. “

Let’s talk about your debut album Private Sunshine. What was the process of composing and recording? When did it start?

“One of the songs I wrote in 2007 was literally completed in the last few years. Most of the songs I’ve made in the last few years, but there are also some old songs. It’s been a while. Before signing with Skint. I created it. No one helped me organize it. I was a lot of DJs. I didn’t always have time to actually go into the studio. “

Acoustically, Private Sunshine takes you in different directions in a retro-futuristic atmosphere. From Uzi’s fascinating opening song Cherry on Top to funky electro My Baby Just Cares For Me to cool and saxophone-filled vibe phones, it’s hard to see this record evolve and blossom into its final form. What kind of feeling was it?

“It’s really nice. I was fortunate enough to work with Dave Bascombe, who mixed this song. He mixed Tears for Fears and Peter Gabriel’s Seeds of Love. I really respect him as a mix engineer, so it was really nice to be able to participate in the recording. He gave me the sound I was looking for. That sound and finish I needed.

“The last thing I felt was that everything was activated when I did the vinyl test press. I was immediately shocked to hear that. I really like it. It looks like a solid piece. I felt it. “

Do you enjoy digging into different sounds and genres by outputting?

“It’s natural for me because I’m not a person who sticks to one genre in everything I do. Whether it’s DJ or music. I listen to different types of music. I draw from different things. It’s natural for me. “

Is the album the debut you imagined, or is it an evolution?

“It’s definitely evolving in a nice way. I’m more than happy to think. Spending that time actually gave me the best results.

Also included are two covers of a smooth 80’s pop-tone version of Time Out of Mind by Steely Dan and Brian Prozerlow’s pinball. Why did you record these on the album and stamp them?

“It was hard to cover Steely Dan, but it came together well. If you didn’t like it, you wouldn’t have put it out. It was very quick and I really liked the atmosphere within a few days in the studio. I went. I usually didn’t try to cover Steely Dan because I think the fans are blasphemous! This time it worked.

“That’s what I’ve been listening to. Ned Doheny, Steely Dan, lots of yacht rock and LA, very warm-sounding music. Cherry on Top and Telephone have a lot of such things. I wanted to put warmth into a music album that made me feel warm. “

Do you think they were mostly influenced by the process of writing the album, or were there other artists you were consuming, or is there anything that personally influenced you? ??

“I often don’t think too much about what I’m doing. Things just come to me. But with those tracks, certainly Cherry on Top, yacht rock I really came up with the idea of ​​making a pop song for Yacht Rock, a pop song for West Coast sounds.

“I like that sound even with Snoop Dogg. I thought it would sound great if I combined it with a pop song. I managed to do what I wanted to do.”

When you were a kid, you were crazy about Madonna, The Bangles, The Human League, and Prince. Did these follow you over the years?

“I’m literally listening to the music I listened to when I was five, with the same surprises I had at that time. It’s been ingrained in me since I was very young. Jellybean, Shep Pettibone, and of course Prince, producers. I’m still as crazy about them as I was back then.

“I’m really lucky to grow up in the 80’s because there was so much great pop music out there.”

The album was released on the iconic label Skint. How cooperative are they as labels for you and your output?

“I love working with them! Damian Harris is my old friend. It was pretty surprising to me that he signed me. I have never seen it come. He was just great. He is a good companion and very supportive of me. I didn’t have it before. Help me realize what I wanted to achieve It’s nice to have someone there. He’s always helping me, from mixing to artwork to vision.

“Like Roisin Murphy, I love what the label is doing. It’s part of BMG. It’s a great combination of indie and major labels at the same time.”

I mentioned Roisin Murphy, but it must have been an exciting time as an artist with a bunch of great music.

“That’s true. People said to me,” Why do you release music during a pandemic? ” There are no open clubs, but I think it was essential to release music during this time.

“We are all listening to the radio and music is a true healing power for everyone. I think it was a good time to release music.”

We look forward to the live music venue reopening. Should it be something you are really looking forward to?

“I’m happy that the actual album release date will be the day when we can resume business at that point. It feels like a positive time to release the actual album.”

Tracks such as Cherry On Top and My Baby Just Cares For Me are heavily airplayed with 6 music. What does that mean for you as an artist?

“I love appearing on the radio! This is one of my favorites, especially because 6 is the station I listen to all day long. To be honest, I’m excited every time it’s turned on. They were amazingly supportive. That really means a lot. “

How can you describe your evolution as an artist? From New Young Pony Club, DJ, New Sins, Tomorrow’s World to solo careers. Did what you learned from these experiences influence your solo output?

“It was a natural development that I wasn’t really aware of. Looking back, I can see that I’ve been here all the time. Every project I’ve done affects me as a musician. I’m producing and writing and finding my own sound acoustically. It was all a learning curve. It was a creative path. As a voice I became stronger and my ability to complete the record It’s stronger than before. “

What are the main differences between solo artists and other artists?

“It’s great on both sides of the coin. It’s great to be able to collaborate to hear things you didn’t expect, add ideas, and bring out new things that you couldn’t think of.

“On the other hand, you don’t have to compromise. That’s great too. If you let go of the product, it’s 100% undiluted. When you’re collaborating, you can let go of things. Let’s go because others want to go that way. When you work for yourself, you’re yourself without compromise.

“I’m looking forward to working with other people again, but now I’m enjoying being myself for the first time.”

Are you already focusing on the next material?

“I’m already working on it! I love it. My head is completely in album 2 mode. I love to focus on it. There’s still a lot of crazy things out there and It gives me something to focus on.

“It’s a little different. That sound is amazing to me. It gives me a unique sound that I didn’t expect. It comes from me.

“I have something to do, so I want to do my best.”

What’s next for Lou? Is the live coming soon?

“That’s right. I did a live stream at a festival in Mexico. It was really nice to be able to feel what it would be like to go live. It was really fun. It looked fun and I was surprised. Since I could only do 4 songs, I have to work on preparing the full album and it will take some time, but I will probably do some shows by the end of summer or autumn.
