Links to lean meat heart disease are hard to ignore

Heart disease kills 9 million people worldwide each year. Currently, it is estimated that about 10 out of 100 people in the UK will eventually die of coronary heart disease, but its association with a meat-rich diet has not been previously understood.

Researchers at the Nuffield Department of Population Health at Oxford University conducted the largest research review to date, examining 13 individual studies of 1.4 million people. All studied individuals followed their health status for up to 30 years and completed a detailed dietary assessment.

According to results published in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science And Nutrition, eating 50g of processed meats such as bacon, ham, sausages, and salami per day increased the risk of coronary heart disease by 18%. For every 50g of unprocessed red meat such as beef, mutton and pork eaten daily, it increased by 9%.

In the same study cohort, researchers found no clear link between eating poultry, such as chicken and turkey, and the likelihood of heart problems.

Researchers have found that if people reduce their lean meat intake to three-quarters (from four times a week to once a week), or if they abandon meat altogether, they have coronary heart disease in the United Kingdom. Deaths from 10 out of 100 people are suggested to decrease. Up to 9/100.

This association is thought to be due to the high salt content of lean meat and processed meat. High levels of saturated fat increase levels of harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, but too much salt increases blood pressure. Both LDL cholesterol and hypertension are established risk factors for coronary heart disease.
