Machine learning algorithms accurately predict mental health crises

Koa Health, a digital mental health care company, and the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust have announced the results of a groundbreaking machine learning algorithm that accurately predicts mental health crises in a real NHS environment. The results of the study suggest that such techniques may enable early intervention and improve patient outcomes.

Koa Health has developed a machine learning model that uses anonymous electronic health records to continuously monitor patients for the risk of a mental health crisis. This model has been shown to correctly predict more than half of the crisis 28 days ago, without a significant false positive rate. The next 6-month study evaluated the use of Koa Health’s algorithm in clinical practice. This model, which accounts for 64% of cases, has proven clinically valuable in terms of managing the number of cases or reducing the risk of crisis.

Koa Health is considering incorporating crisis prediction into its comprehensive mental health services with the goal of using technology to radically improve access to quality support for mental health. The next step is to validate the model in other healthcare systems and carry out the extensive research required to obtain regulatory approval.

Dr. Oliver Harrison, CEO of Koa Health To tell, “”Working as an NHS psychiatrist, I saw too many people arriving at our service through the accident emergency department. When we saw them, they were usually very ill and often experienced problems with their relationships, finances, employment and housing. Replacing the pieces was almost always costly, time consuming and painful for the parties involved. We are pleased to be selected for the Wave1 NHS Testbed in partnership with the Birmingham and Solihull NHS Mental Health Foundation Trust. We shared our vision of moving from crisis-driven reactive care to predictive and preventive proactive care. We are looking forward to continuing our development work with excellent results in this test. We believe this is the future of mental health care in the UK and around the world. “

Dr. Aleksandar Matic, R & D Director of Koa Health, said: “”Prevention is widely seen as the Holy Grail for treating mental health problems. Predicting mental health crises using AI is timely and proactive, rather than reactive interventions to mitigate or prevent mental health crises and truly support both patients and the healthcare system. Intervention is possible. We were very excited when the results from the clinical implementation of our model suggested that our predictions may actually have prevented more serious symptoms. Providing the right intervention at the right time is at the core of the core approach. “
