In a statement, USA Gymnastics said:
“We sincerely support Simone’s decision and commend her courage to prioritize happiness. Her courage shows why she is a role model for so many people.”
Simone won four gold medals in Rio in 2016 and aimed to be the first gymnast to hold the overall women’s title in the tournament since Verachaslavska in 1968.
