Diversity in the workplace is a key metric both for business performance and employee satisfaction. It stands to reason, therefore, that companies would want to improve in this area however they can.

It’s a win-win situation for all involved, but finding the right way forward can be confusing. So today, we’re exploring five countries that consistently rank high on workplace diversity metrics. By understanding what they get right, you’ll be well-equipped to form your own roadmap for success.

Australia

Given that Australia is one of the most diverse countries in the world, it stands to reason that they also have one of the most diverse workforces. Both companies and policymakers place significant emphasis on diversity in the workplace in Australia, and shifts are constantly being made in the right direction. There are some companies that excel particularly well in this area, but almost everyone is trying their best, and that commitment is driving inclusive business models forward throughout the country.

The Netherlands

The Netherlands is also making leaps and bounds in its workplace diversity metrics. Although they lost their spot at the top of the inclusive workplace ranking, Canada still has quite a diverse workforce placing fifth in the world for diversity. This may have something to do with their reputation for being so polite, but we think it’s great no matter the reason.

Italy

With the population of non-EU nationals rising, Italy is taking steps to ensure that everyone feels welcomed and able to gain employment in the country. They have a Charter for Equal Opportunities and Equality at Work, and many companies are working to eliminate roadblocks to employment for both citizens and non-citizens alike.

Having said that, however, there is a significant amount of government red tape that hampers diversity and inclusion to a certain extent. The good news is that there are organizations dedicated to eradicating this barrier, and Italy is taking many steps in the right direction.

India

The last country on our list of diverse workforces is India. In a place with such a large geographical blueprint and so many languages spoken, the barriers here could be considered harder to conquer than those in other places. It is also true that in many areas, women have been under-represented in the workforce.

Times are changing, however, and 77% of Indian employers are committed to moving in the right direction. This commitment is reflected by their placing in the top ten for diversity, so even though the percentage of businesses with inclusivity policies in place is low, advancements are clearly being made.
