New Zealand rugby star Sean Wainui died tragically in a car accident at the age of only 25.
The Maori All Blacks Center, 25, died Monday morning after a vehicle crash near Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand.
He was the only one involved in the crash.
Wainui is survived by his wife Page and his two children, his son Kawariki (2) and his stepdaughter Arahia.
When the news of his tragic death was confirmed, compliments were poured on the stars.
The official Twitter account for All Blacks posted:
“Shaun, you are an inspiration and will never be forgotten. We extend all our strength and aloha to your friends and Farnau.”
Mark Robinson, CEO of New Zealand Rugby, said Wainui’s death was “a dark day for rugby.”
“Shaun’s death will be felt deeply by everyone involved in rugby, especially the Bay of Plenty and Chiefs teammates.
“We share their sorrow and shock.”
Wainui starred in New Zealand at a level under the age of 20 before playing for the Maori All Blacks (development and exhibition side for Maori players).
He has made 44 Super Rugby appearances in Waikato Chiefs.
In June of this year, he recorded five tries against the NSW Waratas. This is the new record for the most tries by players in Super Rugby games.
Clayton McMillan, who coached him in both Chiefs and Maori All Blacks, added his voice to the many compliments paid to Wainui.
McMillan said: “He symbolizes everything that players can ask for.
“He was an influential member of the team he belonged to, and his presence will be lost.
“I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Page, Kawariki, Arahia, and his wider Furnau during this difficult time.
“We, along with our players and staff, provide them with full support.”
Former All Black Sonny Bill Williams, who played in Toronto in the Super League and Rugby Union Touron, posted his own compliment on social media.
“My idea is in Sean Weinuis’s family, especially his wife and little kid. I wasn’t playing with him, but his mana came towards him as his opposition. I could always feel it. “
