The government has instructed Stormont Executive to outsource abortion services in Northern Ireland using the new authority.
Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis confirmed a widely anticipated move in a written ministerial statement to Parliament.
However, while individual medical trusts currently provide services on a temporary basis, the Ministry of Health does not centrally outsource services due to an ongoing impasse within the executive department.
In March, the government told Mr. Lewis that the area Ministry of Public Health Outsource service.
On Thursday, he officially took that step and instructed the Ministry of Health and the First Deputy Prime Minister to outsource services by March 31, 2020.
“This ongoing stalemate leaves me with no choice but to give instructions,” Lewis said.
“I have a legal and moral obligation to entitle women and girls in Northern Ireland and to have access to medical care as set out in the 2020 Regulations.”
