Opinion polls find that the majority of Northern Ireland considers the Brexit protocol “positive”

The latest poll of public opinion conducted for Queen’s University, Belfast We found that 52% of respondents consider the Northern Ireland Protocol to be a balanced “good thing”.

That number has increased from 43% who answered the same question in June.

The poll is the latest commissioned by Queens to monitor Northern Ireland’s attitude towards Brexit, especially the trade agreements that have created economic barriers between the region and the United Kingdom.

The Northern Ireland majority seems to be more accepting and actually supporting the Protocol.

The online poll conducted by LucidTalk in early October was the third such poll since the protocol came into force at the beginning of the year.

The results show that the mechanism of controversy continues to sharply divide the region’s views, which also shows the growing acceptance of the arrangement.

Fifty-three percent of the 2,682 voters sampled found that they agreed or strongly agreed that the protocol was an appropriate means of managing Brexit’s impact on Northern Ireland. In a June survey, this figure was 46%.

The Protocol was agreed by the UK and the EU as a way to allow the Irish border to flow freely after Brexit. It achieves that by moving regulatory and customs checks to the sea boundary between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom.

London and Brussels are now trapped in negotiations to redraw aspects of the Protocol and cut out some of the bureaucratic formalism created in the Irish Sea trade.

Many supporters and union members strongly oppose the Protocol, claiming that it weakens Northern Ireland’s constitutional position in the United Kingdom.

In the threat from DUP to withdraw power sharing in Staumont if major changes are not secured British government If negotiations with the EU failed, he threatened to unilaterally suspend part of the Protocol by invoking the Article 16 mechanism.
