Retail industry groups have come together to form a pioneering agreement to reduce carbon emissions associated with retailers’ assets. The retailer / landlord’s Net Zero Building Protocol “outlines the principles required for a Net Zero retail site.”

The agreement hopes to set high sustainability standards between retailers and real estate owners and support business commitments related to reducing carbon emissions. In addition, it maintains the UK Government’s unique requirement to increase the energy efficiency of the building.

The protocol covers two main areas. First, it aims to improve the energy efficiency of buildings and encourages real estate owners and retailers to invest in sustainable improvements such as insulation. In addition, it aims to make it easier to share data on energy usage.

Second, it supports more use of renewable energy in buildings, encourages the exploration of options for purchasing such sources, and increases the implementation of onsite biodiversity.

“The Net Zero Building Protocol is a great opportunity for retailers and real estate owners to work together for a more environmentally friendly future,” said the Chief Executive Officer of the UK Retail Consortium (BRC), the organization that includes the protocol. This protocol is provided as part of BRC’s Climate Action Roadmap and is supported by over 75 major retailers such as Asos, Marks and Spencer, Ted Baker and Next. The roadmap aims to ensure that retailers and their supply chains reach net zero by 2040, in line with the national goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Dickinson added: “Climate change requires cross-industry collaboration. This protocol gives retailers and real estate owners the language and structure to build a more environmentally friendly real estate market.”

Developed for COP26, the BRC has released a climate change behavior roadmap through the Better Retail Better World campaign to encourage the retail industry to build a fairer and more sustainable economy in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
