Huge fire breaks out at flats on top of business centre in London’s Tower Hamlets: 100 firefighters race to tackle massive inferno – with column of black smoke visible from M25

  • Flames ripped through the top of Bow House business centre on Fairfield Road 

A huge fire has broken out in London‘s Tower Hamlets with plumes of black smoke being visible from as far away as the M25. 

Video footage shown on social media shows the flames ripping through the top of Bow House business centre, on Fairfield Road, Bow, east of the capital. 

Some on social media said the fire had broken out in residential flats on top of the business centre, but London Fire Brigade have not released the cause of the fire at this stage.

Shocked commuters travelling on the Elizabeth Line through Stratford posted footage showing the huge clouds of black smoke filling the capital’s skyline. 

Smoke from the burning building can be seen for miles, with some posting photos of the incident from the opposite side of the capital in London Bridge.

Crowds gathered on the streets to watch the huge clouds of black smoke pour out of the building

London Fire Brigade said 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters were in attendance.

Most of the roof of the six floor building is said to be alight.  People are being urged to avoid the area. 

Footage of the inferno posted on TikTok showed a police cordon in front of the burning buildings, with several blue light ambulances also in attendance. 

Other videos shared on X, formally known as Twitter, showed crowds and crowds of people gathered in Bow watching emergency services working while sirens blared.

The fire service was seen using two cranes to pour water onto the roof.  

There are no reports of injuries at this stage.  

Emergency services rushed to the scene after 120 calls were made to 999, as the fire is ‘very visible’, according to the brigade.

Crowds of onlookers gathered near to the building as they watched fire officers try and put out the flames.  

Fire crews from Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, Homerton and surrounding fire stations are in attendance.

Tower Hamlets police said on X, formally known as Twitter: ‘All emergency services are working hard to put out a fire on Bow Road, junction with Fairfield Road, E3. Please avoid the area and divert your routes.’

TfL buses 25, 108, 205, 425 are also being diverted, while long lines of traffic have begun to build. 

In an update, London Fire Brigade said on X: ‘Crews are continuing to work hard and make steady progress at the fire at a business centre with dwellings above in Bow.

‘Two of the Brigade’s 32m turntable ladders have been deployed as water towers to tackle the flames from height.’

Station Commander Anthony Lewis, at the scene in Bow, said: ‘Road closures are currently in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.’
