Sangley Road Catford fire: 7 escaped

Seven people escaped fires in two flats above the Catford store.

Three fire engines and about 15 firefighters worked on the blaze.

A pile of garbage in the back of the building caught fire and spread to the roof of one of the apartment buildings.

Part of the roof, gutter and single-storey fascia were destroyed by the flames.

Seven people left the apartment before the brigade arrived.

No injuries have been reported since the incident.

The fire was extinguished shortly after 4:00 am.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental and caused by unsafe disposal of smoking material.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: “Three fire engines and about 15 firefighters were dispatched to the apartment above the shop on Sungriy Road in Cutford.

“The garbage pile at the back of the building caught fire and the apartment roof caught fire.

“A small portion of the roof, gutter and single-story fascia were destroyed by the flames.

“Seven residents were evacuated from two apartments before the brigade arrived. No injuries were reported.

“The brigade was called in at 1:02 am and the incident was over by 4:02 am.

“Firefighters from the Lewisham, Forest Hill and Leegreen Fire Departments were present.

“The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental and due to the disposal of unsafe smoking equipment.”
