‘Union demands are out of reach’, health secretary said further strikes to be announced

Unison has announced that paramedics and other paramedics will go on strike this winter.

The UK’s largest trade union announced the results of its month-long NHS strike vote last night. 80,000 union members voted in favor of the industrial action.

As a result, thousands of 999 call handlers, ambulance technicians, paramedics and their colleagues in ambulance services in the North East, North West, London, Yorkshire and South West will take industrial action.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay said in a statement in response to the renewed strike action, “Our economic situation means that the demands of the union are out of reach.”

Mr Barclay said: “I am very appreciative of the hard work and dedication of the NHS staff and deeply regret that some are taking industrial action as a harsh winter approaches.

“Our economic situation means that we cannot meet the demands of trade unions. Under the Agenda for Change contract, every 1% increase in wages for all staff costs around £700m a year. will cost you.

“We have prioritized the NHS with record funding and have fully accepted the recommendations of the Independent Salary Review Board to give more than 1 million NHS workers a pay raise of at least £1,400 this year, 9.3%.

“This is up from 3% last year, when public sector salaries were frozen and government support for living expenses was widespread. The NHS has tried and tested plans to minimize disruption and ensure emergency services continue to function.

“My door remains open to discuss with unions how to make the NHS a better place to work.”

Nurses’ strikes are already scheduled for December 15th and December 20th, with up to 100,000 staff in 76 locations.

On Wednesday morning, Saffron Cordery, interim chief executive of the NHS provider, which represents hospitals, communities and emergency services, said it would be “very welcome” for the military to “play a role” in keeping the NHS up this winter. It will be done.”

She added:

“What we have to remember is that while we really welcome their support, it doesn’t play a central role in maintaining the ambulance service.

Cordery specifically commented on the new actions by paramedics, stating: But trust leaders, ambulance trust leaders, will take as many steps as possible to mitigate the risks of these actions. ”
