Greg Wise reveals the moving reasons behind his decision to sign up for Strictly Come Dancing.
The actor is known for his various film, television and theatrical roles, including The Crown, Cranford, Walking on Sunshine, and his breakout roll on a sunny day.
He will join BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker, peep show Robert Wise, and Ruth Wimin star Judi Love when the hit BBC One show returns this weekend.
After first declining the opportunity to appear in the show, Greg thought of his sister Claire Wise.
“I was asked and thought,’No, I can’t do it,'” Greg said. Manchester Evening News.
“Then I thought about it. Almost exactly five years from the day my sister died was the first day we did our routine about this, and my sister was a real disco. It was a diva.
“She is a family dancer and left the world in a glittering casket.
“And this show is all glitter, divers and discos, so I thought I had to do it for her.”
Greg’s sister Claire died of cancer in 2016 at the age of 51.
And he also has in mind the particular song he wants to play in his sister’s memory.
“The Dancing Queen was her big one, so I think I could probably waltz it. It looks fun.”
Greg spoke to his “dear female wife” Emma Thompson when asked to attend this year’s show-and her reaction to his first refusal.
“She said,’You are angry, you have to do it,'” he recalled.
Greg went on to explain that Emma was planning a “nice autumn” after the actress had taken a good shot from January to this month.
“We were going on a holiday, and in the five-minute conversation space we had, the whole fall was kicked by long grass, and here I am.
“She’s excited because she can relax, support me, and watch every Saturday night, or Saturday as long as I survive.”
After spending 30 years in the theater, film and television industry, Greg also said he “did not dream” of something like Strictly.
But when he was asked, “Are you in it to win?” He said. I want to survive as long as possible.
“I want to do as much as I can. That’s how I approach everything.”
This year, Greg will be the oldest in the tournament, following in the footsteps of 2020 winner Bill Bailey.
“I’m the oldest here,” Greg said. “I’m a grandpa. I think we’re the same age, so we need to emulate Mr. Bailey from last year.”
He added: When I was first asked to do it, I contacted him and said what you think.
“He said it was a tough job and you had to take care of your feet.”
Strictly Come Dancing will return to BBC One on Saturday, September 18th at 7:45 pm.
