Studies show that coronavirus antibodies last “at least 6 months” after infection

According to a new study, coronavirus antibodies last for at least 6 months after infection for the majority of people infected with the virus.

Researchers at UK Biobank, the UK’s leading biomedical database and research resource, have measured previous levels of infection in various population groups throughout the UK.

It was found that 8.8% of the UK population was infected by December 2020, rising to 12.4% in London and 5.5% in Scotland.

The study also looked at how long the antibodies in infected people last.

The Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor, Therpatrick Valence, said: “These latest results provide a useful confirmation of antibody maintenance against Sars-CoV-2 over a 6-month period.

“By making the findings available within the abundant resources of UK Biobank, we will be able to better understand the effects of the disease over time.”

According to the study, 99% of participants who were previously positive for infection retained coronavirus antibodies for 3 months after infection and 88% retained for 6 months of the study.

According to researchers, this indicates that antibodies produced after spontaneous infection may provide some protection to most people against reinfection for at least 6 months.

Professor Naomi Allen, Chief Scientist at UK Biobank, said: “This important study reveals that the vast majority of people carry detectable antibodies for at least 6 months after being infected with the coronavirus.

“It is unclear how this is associated with immunity, but the results suggest that people may be protected from subsequent infections for at least 6 months after spontaneous infection.

“Longer follow-up allows us to determine how long such protection is likely to last.”

The most common symptom associated with the use of coronavirus antibodies was taste and olfactory loss, which was reported by 43% of seropositive (indicating past infections) participants.

About a quarter (24%) of seropositive participants are completely asymptomatic, and 40% have three classic Covid-19 symptoms (fever, persistent dry cough, taste and smell). There was no loss).
