Succession Season 4 Episode 3: Logan Roy dies on an airplane

Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) ties the knot with fiancee Willa (Justine Lupe) in the third episode of the fourth and final season of HBO‘s Succession.

Willa seemed to be having second thoughts about tying the knot with the eccentric Connor, the oldest of Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) children.

The trailer revealed that Connor was ‘nervous’ about whether or not his father Logan would actually show up at the wedding.

Meanwhile, Roman (Kieran Culkin) appears to be having second thoughts about re-teaming with his father Logan… before his father shockingly and suddenly passes away on an airplane.

Logan summoned Roman to his home at the end of last week’s episode and told his son that he needed him to help finish the deal with Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard).

Tom calls Roman and asks if he’s told Gerri yet, but he says he hasn’t and she hasn’t arrived yet, but she’s actually there.

Roman tells Gerri they should have a chat once they set sail, revealing it’s a message from Logan.

Gerri realizes that she’s being let go and she’s clearly upset, stating she danced them through a thunderstorm without getting wet before storming away.

Roman calls Logan and says it was, ‘horrible’ with Gerri, adding he’s not totally OK with him using him like that.

Kendall (Jeremy Strong) arrives as the board the boat, finding Willa, who says Connor is ‘fixated’ on the cake, saying it’s a ‘looney cake.’

Greg wants to congratulate Kendall and Shiv but they blow him off as they go find Connor.

Connor says that Logan will pop by dockside and he wants them to stay topside when he gets there.

Shiv says they should tell Connor that Logan isn’t really coming as Roman gets a call from Tom, who says their dad is ‘very sick,’ but the call keeps breaking up.

Tom says it’s ‘very very bad’ adding he was ‘short of breath and went into the bathroom’ and someone ‘broke in’ to get him.

Tom says they are doing ‘chest compressions’ which freaks out Kendall and Roman, as Frank says he’s ‘not in good shape.’

‘We love you dad. We love you. I love you dad, I do,’ Kendall says, adding he ‘can’t forgive you but it’s OK and I love you,’ Kendall says.

Tom asks if Shiv is there as Kendall goes to get Shiv, giving her an update on his condition as they walk back upstairs… as Roman says, ‘They think dad died.’

Shiv breaks down in tears as Kendall asks Tom to put Shiv on as she talks to him but no one knows if he’s dead.

Back on the plane, they’re still giving him chest compressions and Tom doesn’t know if he’s alive or not as chest compressions continue.

A tearful Shiv tells Logan she loves him, telling him not to go now, as we see Logan laying motionless and shirtless as chest compressions continue.

Tom asks Shiv if she wants to stay on as she breaks down in tears again as Roman hugs her and Roman asks what ‘precisely is happening right now.’

The kids asks for their dad’s doctor and Kendall calls Jess and tells her to get a conference call together.

Kendall calls Frank (Peter Friedman) and asks to speak with the pilot but Frank says he can’t speak to the pilot because he’s flying the plane.

‘Is he gone, Frank? I mean… is he gone?’ Kendall asks Frank, but Frank says he doesn’t know.

‘I don’t wanna bulls**t you, Ken. I think he went. I think he’s gone,’ Frank says, as Kendall thanks Frank and hangs up.

Connor says he’s having a ‘cake nightmare’ as Shiv says they think he died on the plane.

‘Well, is he?’ Connor says matter-of-factly as Kendall says they don’t know and he’s getting chest compressions.

‘I never got the chance to make him proud of me,’ Connor says, before he tells the kids he ‘can’t do this’ before walking away.

They go into a private room as they continue to discuss their dad’s condition as Roman says they don’t know what really happened.

Roman doesn’t seem to be accepting that Logan has died but he insists they don’t know he’s gone for sure.

Roman says, ‘All I’m saying– I’m not being crazy. I’m stating a fact. I’m saying we don’t know. And until we do know, it’s not a very nice thing to say, is it? So, f***ing stop!’

Carl says they should all drink to Logan, while Karolina says that they should put a ‘timeline’ together.

They say they should contact Matsson and tell him what happened while Kerry enters, clearly distraught.

‘That’s so f***ing weird, Jesus,’ Kerry says, as Karolina says they are using the space to ‘coordinate a response.’

Frank tells Kerry to get some rest and they’ll make her a part of the response as she leaves and goes into the back.

Tom goes into another room and calls Greg, telling him he needs to go to the office, as Greg asks why and he says, ‘Because Logan is dead.’

He tells Greg, ‘you have to stick to Cyd like a limpet, okay? And you delete my folder marked “Logistics,” and then you delete that from the trash.’

‘And I might need you calling around with my narrative. You sing my song. -Merry Christmas,’ as Tom admits he’s not OK.

‘I have lost my protector and this is total lockdown. If this leaks, it’s a stock price rodeo and a f***ing slit throat for the big mouth, okay? Okay, but people– people should know that I was with him, okay?’ Tom says, distraught.

Hugo Baker (Fisher Stevens) arrives and says they want him to be a liasson between those on the plane and them.

Kendall gets a call from Karolina, saying they stopped CPR, as Roman wonders why they did that.

The boat starts taking off as Hugo says those on the plane are already drafting a statement.

The kids aren’t happy about that as Kendall tells them they want to get the boat turned around.

The kids call Karolina and ask about the statement as Shiv says, ‘it feels f***ing presumptuous.’

Frank says they are putting something together because they need to ‘reassure the market.’

Carl says the kids are ‘estranged’ from their father but Kendall says that is not accurate.

Hugo brings in Gerri, telling them he briefed her, as Gerri says she’s very sorry.

‘He was an important man in all our lives, especially yours,’ Gerry says, adding, ‘He was a lot of things…’ but Roman says they don’t know he’s dead yet.

Karolina: Kendall gets a call from Karolina, saying they stopped CPR, as Roman wonders why they did that

Gerri wonders if they can hold the news until the market closes as Hugo asks if they want him to circle the plane.

They tell Hugo to get the boat turned around and they want to get back to land before Hugo leaves.

Kendall says that everything they say and do today will be in memoirs and SEC filings.

‘We are highly liable to misinterpretation. So, what we do today will always be what we did the day our father died,’ Kendall says.

Connor talks to Willa and they agree they should postpone the weeding, as Connor says they will assume Willa backed out.

‘I guess the truth is, I’m scared if we don’t that you’ll walk away. I’m always scared you’re gonna walk away,’ Connor admits.

‘You’re young and you’re full of life and I’m, I don’t know. My father’s dead and I feel old,’ Connor says.

He apologizes for ‘stealing her away from the world’ before Connor asks if she’s only with him for money.

Kendall: Kendall says that everything they say and do today will be in memoirs and SEC filings

‘Yeah, there is something about money and safety here, yeah. Yeah, yeah, there is. But… I’m happy,’ Willa says.

‘It’s okay. I’m not gonna walk. Not today anyway,’ Willa says as they both laugh.

Gerri returns on the phone with Karolina, putting her on speaker phone. Karolina reveals she already heard from a reporter who heard a rumor about Logan’s health.

She doesn’t know the source of the rumor as Gerri says they can handle everything for the kids.

Kendall, Roman and Shiv go outside and talk and Kendall says he doesn’t want to have to say things.

Hugo returns and Kendall says to wait, as Shiv says they should be in on the statement that is being prepared.

Kendall says the kids need to be in control before the board takes action and Roman and Shiv agree and call Hugo over.

Kendall tells Hugo that they’ll draft the statement as Hugo says the board will have to sign off.

Willa: ‘Yeah, there is something about money and safety here, yeah. Yeah, yeah, there is. But… I’m happy,’ Willa says

Roman tells Gerri that he needs the room, adding he is ‘pretty sad’ and ‘totally numb’ as Gerri gives him the room so he can call Matsson.

The boat returns back to land as the kids all get in a helicopter, as Logan’s plane lands and is met with an ambulance and two police squad cars.

The kids all walk up to the plane with Hugo as Carl and Frank de-plane with Karolina, all shaking hands with Hugo as they talk about edits to the statement.

They ask how to get him off the plane as Hugo notices photographers nearby behind a fence.

Hugo goes and meets with several assembled reporters and brings the kids out, with Shiv holding the statement.

‘As you know, my father, Logan Roy, was pronounced dead on arrival at Teterboro Airport this afternoon,’ Shiv begins

‘I’d like to thank the press for their respect at this time. You’ll understand that I won’t be taking any questions. But my brothers and I just want to say that Logan Roy built a great American family company. And as you know, the board will be convening in the next hours to decide on the leadership of the company going forward,’ she adds.

‘This nation has lost a passionate champion and an American Titan, and we lost a beloved father. Thank you,’ Shiv concludes.

Roman: Roman tells Gerri that he needs the room, adding he is ‘pretty sad’ and ‘totally numb’ as Gerri gives him the room so he can call Matsson

A journalist asks, ‘And in terms of your roles at the company?’

Shiv responds, ‘We intend to– we intend to shepherd it through it’s– whatever its future may be, but we’ll be there. We intend to be there,’ before leaving.

The kids ask if they should go see their father, as Shiv jokes, ‘Shouldn’t we? I mean, he’s not gonna get angry if we don’t.’

While, for a majority of the series, the Roy children have been at odds with each other, the last few episodes of Season 3 found them finally joining forces to stop their father Logan from selling off the family’s media conglomerate.

Little did they know that family black sheep Tom Wambsgans (Matthew McFadyen) betrayed his own wife Shiv and gave Logan a heads up on what they were doing, giving him enough to remove their power to block the impending sale.

The final shots of Season 3 seemed to indicate that Shiv realized her husband betrayed her, though it’s unclear how that will play out in Season 4.

Succession creator Jesse Armstrong first confirmed that Season 4 will be the end of the show in a wide-ranging interview with The New Yorker, where he was asked why he decided to confirm the final season before it debuted.

‘One, we could have said it as soon as I sort of decided, almost when we were writing it, which I think would be weird and perverse,’ Armstrong began.

‘We could have said it at the end of the season. I quite like that idea, creatively, because then the audience is just able to enjoy everything as it comes, without trying to figure things out, or perceiving things in a certain way once they know it’s the final season,’ he added.

‘But, also, the countervailing thought is that we don’t hide the ball very much on the show. I feel a responsibility to the viewership, and I personally wouldn’t like the feeling of, “Oh, that’s it, guys. That was the end.” I wouldn’t like that in a show. I think I would like to know it is coming to an end,’ he clarified.

He added, ‘And, also, there’s a bunch of prosaic things, like it might be weird for me and the cast as we do interviews. It’s pretty definitively the end, so then it just might be uncomfortable having to sort of dissemble like a politician for ages about it. Hopefully, the show is against bullshit, and I wouldn’t like to be bulls****ing anyone when I was talking about it.’
