As the pandemic ashes disappear rapidly at the end of the year, the nail-biting robotics competition will intensify. There is a major robotics organization named Vex throughout the UK, and the number of competitions has increased rapidly at the beginning of the 2021-22 season. This happens after a year of inactivity due to the famous virus Covid-19 that we all heard. Last week I was able to participate in one contest and see all the amazing robots that teens around the world are building and the big clashes they fought.

VexEDR is a branch of Vex Organization. Every year, teams around the world build metal robots to use and deploy in-game components to set up the game to secure the most points and win. .. Vex EDR in the UK is only available after the 10th year. Schools and organizations around the world are hosting regional competitions for many other teams to face each other directly in order to win a place for the national championship. After that, the top teams from each country will fly around the world and participate in the world championships. There, the best teams fight each other and win the world’s greatest robot award, the Vex World Champions. The name of this year’s game is Tipping Point, and each game has four teams. In a two-on-two match, two poems on each side (called an alliance).

Images of the 2019 World Championship My team and I, MTS_Eclipse, participated in one of these first original tournaments last week. We drove for over 2 hours from Northwood to Coventry hosted by King Henry VIII School at 6am. The moment we entered, the team was already working hard on robots and strategy, and the whole room was full of excitement and anxiety. Each team was given their own table for deploying and working with robots. Next, each robot had to be inspected to make sure the robot was within the size limit. These were 18 x 18 x 18 inches.

After the test, I had to prepare for two practice games. These were mainly used to make sure their robots were working well, but they scouted robots from other teams to see their strengths and weaknesses before the main qualifying round. .. During this period, we also needed to make final checks and changes to the engineering sketchbook, which is the team’s work timeline. I was responsible for the team’s sketchbook and I scanned it several times to check for errors and then handed it over for inspection. Our team was able to win both practice games and robots managed to work well, giving us a lot of happiness and peace of mind.

After the practice match, we moved on to the main qualifying match. All teams had to play eight games with randomly selected partners in the alliance. The team with the most wins will be ranked highest. Random selection means that even the best teams have to rely on their partners to win, and every win, whether a 13-year veteran or just a 10-year veteran. It meant that you would definitely get it. It also meant that teams needed to meet with their alliance partners and discuss their combined strategies for the game. This really helped the teams build bonds and get to know each other. This makes these tournaments so much fun that you can make friends with strangers who didn’t know anything about it. Obviously, these friendships are important on the side, but what’s happening in the field of everyone’s attention as giant robots collide with each other for goals and points to win their glory.

After hours of nailing games, all eight qualifying rounds were over and the teams were all ranked. Our team ranked 5th out of 20 teams, even though we were new to Vex EDR. I won 6 out of 8 games and lost 2 games. The other two teams in our school managed to reach 1st and 8th place. After these, all 20 ranked teams will be able to select alliance partners to team with in the rest of the competition. The top team first selects a partner and a handshake between the two teams informs them of the transaction. We have decided to partner with our fellow school team, MTS_Ares. MTS_Ares knew them well and believed that the robots could work together well. After winning 121-146 in a very tense match, I managed to win the quarterfinals. As the semi-finals approached, we prepared the robot for the next big collision.

“The pressure on us is just to increase each game, making it harder for each to win and getting a little closer to the glory of the national championship qualifiers,” said Aaditya Bhandarkar, chief builder of our team.

It’s time for the semi-finals. We got a great start by scoring goals and rings and gaining an advantage early on. However, on the way, one of the accelerators on the wheels came out of the motor, and the robot had a hard time driving, causing a disaster. This cost us a huge amount of money and was finally beaten. It was an annoying loss, but we knew that losing was part of the game and we needed to learn for the next tournament, so we accepted it gracefully. Fortunately, our school’s third team (1st place) is the highest award the team can win and the Excellence Award, the only way to compete in national championships other than winning tournaments. I was able to. Overall, competition is still a success for us, and we all learned a lot. We loved the atmosphere of the whole tournament and saw how everyone was driven from the pandemic. We look forward to the rest of the season, but we know there will be lots of fights, tears and laughter!
