Tottenham’s La Rose Lane sign vandalized after name change

Black Boy Lane, south of Tottenham, was renamed La Rose Lane yesterday (Monday 23 January) in honor of the late black publisher, poet and essayist John La Rose (1927-2006). I was.

The name change was organized in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis in May 2020, sparking anti-racism protests around the world.

But this morning (January 24), less than 24 hours after the official name change, Haringay Council leader Perai Ahmet announced that the road sign crossed out with black spray paint on La Rose Lane would be I tweeted the photo.

La Rose founded New Beacon Books in Stroud Green and later played a key role in founding the Caribbean Artists Movement.

After public consultation, the council decided to rename the street in February 2022.

In a statement on its website, the council said a “significant number” of people living on the street opposed the name change at the time.

Commenting on the decision to change the name, Cllr Ahmet previously said, “We are delighted to honor John LaRose with the new street name.

“John has made a significant contribution to black life both here in Haringey and across England, and has played a key role in raising awareness of black writers and artists and advocating for inclusive education.

“We understand that this is a decision that has provoked an enthusiastic response.

“I know there have been several rounds of consultation and that the works council has considered all opinions in deciding to rename the road.

“Now is the time to move this forward…

“I also want to make it clear that this is just one piece of the work we have to do to ensure that Haringay is a place where everyone is welcome and accepted.

“We look forward to working with residents and communities on this important mission in the coming months and years.”

“John’s family is truly proud that John’s life and work is recognized by having a road named after him,” said John LaRose’s grandson, Renaldo LaRose. .

“By commemorating his name in this way, we hope to reach new audiences with the message of his work – the urgent need for racial equality and justice.”
