Up and Atom: Ariel’s Innovator Behind Britain’s Best Driver’s Car

Matt Childs-9 Years at Ariel, Parts Manager

“I have a fixed pattern,” parts manager Matt Childs tells me. “We go around four times a day to make sure the technicians have what they need to build. In the morning, leisure time is spent to ensure that orders are placed. Courier Will come around 1:30 pm, and in the afternoon, if you want to clean up the deliveries of the day and make sure you make the most of the space we have. “

Stocks conveniently live just above Build Bay, but it’s clear that space is tight. And obviously, not all are for new builds. “Service kits are sent to the garage, but many parts are sent directly to the customer,” says Childs. “Many of them like to do something on their own. Many of the transactions we make are directly related to them because many are mechanically concerned.”

Childs believes that over time, fewer upgrades will go to the latest car owners. “In 4, we did a lot of upgrade work early,” he says. “Older cars tend to sell things like Orleans dampers that weren’t available in 2010, but in 4, there may be fewer upgrades because Orleans and sequential boxes were available from new. In most cases, it does Atom 2 and 3. There are some 3 elements that can be ported to 2. “

5 years with Tom Ward, Chief Engineer, Ariel

“A common day? I get a lot of emails from a lot of suppliers,” Ward laughs. “And make sure the parts arrive in time for the prototype. Check out the other engineers and then do some design yourself. Often it goes back and forth with Ralph. [Tayler-Webb, chief designer]I’m telling me to keep things small, fit in between bodywork, and look good. “

In addition to Ward and Taylor Webb, Ariel has three design engineers. “One has been working full-time at Nomad 2 for over a year, the other has been working at Hipercar, and the other is currently working 75% at Nomad,” says Ward.
