Wimbledon has been accused of dismissing temporary staff for “strange” reasons | Wimbledon 2022

Wimbledon has been accused of dismissing temporary staff for “strange” reasons after overestimating the required numbers.

It seems that some people who are temporarily working for hospitality or housework suddenly lost their jobs because they went to the bathroom without asking.

After the shift, at least three temporary workers are said to have lost their jobs because they sat on the hill with a drink.

A 19-year-old gap-year student working as part of a housekeeping team said they were relatively high-paying and were initially “browned” to get a shift.

“But we are working on Wednesday and during the lunch break [friend] I sat on the hill and ate strawberries, “they said.

“Then he receives an email saying he won’t get any more shifts. Now we literally shift any more for us to do something during breaks or after work. I’m bricking it to sit on the hill in case I’m told I don’t have it. The whole thing is weird. “

Another temporary worker called this situation “confused” and said: They are firing people to the left, right, and center.

“They basically said they were too crowded and didn’t have enough fans here-not what they expected-so they have to fire people.

“People are being fired because they use the fact that there are too many people and the staff are watching and drinking tennis as an excuse.”

An email sent by the contractor to the staff confirmed the all-England loan tennis The Croquet Club (AELTC) was aiming to reduce headcount. “As you may have noticed, the number of visitors is lower than expected, so AELTC is asking you to consider reducing the number of staff on the day.”

The number of Wimbledon contestants was slightly lower than expected. The capacity is 42,000 a day, but if you include ticket resale, the total can be higher. Approximately 38,500 fans participated on Wednesday and Thursday. The number of participants per day in 2009 was a record high of 46,826.

A spokesperson for AELTC said:

“We meet with each of our major contractors each year and agree to terms of employment that are shared with all potential employees.

“We are delighted that many of our staff return to work in Wimbledon each year to help us organize great events.”
