Zahawi rose to national prominence in late 2020 after Johnson appointed him to lead the deployment of a coronavirus vaccine during the height of the pandemic. The UK is one of his fastest growing countries of any major country, and with his engineering background and entrepreneurial skills, Zahawi has won many accolades.
He was promoted to education minister and later became prime minister when Sunak stepped down from the post last July in protest of the ethical storm that engulfed Mr Johnson. After Johnson resigned, Zahawi declared himself a candidate for party leader, but he quickly withdrew after receiving few votes from lawmakers.
Mr. Johnson was replaced by Mr. Truss in a dizzying upheaval last summer. then expelled 45 days later, in favor of Mr Sunak — Mr Zahawi often seemed to be on all sides. Mr Johnson then toyed with the idea of running again in October. And finally, Mr. Sunak.
But his finances were under constant scrutiny as Mr Zahawi navigated the perilous hordes of Conservative politics. The sale of YouGov, which made Zahawi wealthy, led to a dispute over unpaid taxes. British newspapers have reported that he has allotted his father shares in the founder held in an offshore family trust. Zahawi denied trying to evade taxes, but his settlement included a sizeable fine.
In a letter to Sunak, Zahawi said the spread of vaccines and Queen Elizabeth’s State Funeral He served as Prime Minister of the Duchy of Lancaster, one of the most prestigious posts in the Cabinet. Although he never directly addressed his tax issues, he lashed out at news reports on the issue.
Mr Zahawi wrote: “I am sorry to my family for the toll this has taken on them.”
