Rishi Sunak insists it’s not fair for illegal migrants arriving on small boats to ‘jump the queue’
RISHI Sunak insisted it is not fair for illegal migrants arriving here on small boats to “jump the queue”.
And the PM said people allowed to move to the UK must integrate and sign up to British values.
He declined to back Home Secretary Suella Braverman who this week warned of a looming “hurricane” of mass migration and claimed multiculturalism had failed.
And he told ITV’s This Morning yesterday: “We all agree that Britain is an incredibly welcoming place.
“We’re all living proof of the fact that immigrants can come here, do well and that’s something I think we do better that any country in the world. I think we also agree when people do come here they should integrate.
“They should sign up to British values so we have that shared understanding amongst us.”
But he warned Britain’s reputation for being compassionate could be at risk if the system cannot cope with an influx of illegal migrants.
Taxpayers pay £8million a day in hotel bills to house asylum seekers — with many brought here by gangs.
The PM has made stopping small boats crossing the Channel a key priority. But the Rwanda deportation plan is being held up by courts.
Ministers say the case for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights will become “irresistible” if the plan is ultimately blocked.
