London’s electric car revolution got a big boost on Thursday with plans for 100 new super-fast charging points.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said: City Hall Transport for London will also release land near the capital’s Red Route highway network to increase the number of ‘on-the-go’ chargers for taxis, business vehicles and emergency vehicles.

He was scheduled to speak at the Evening Standard’s first plug-in summit on Thursday afternoon. He would bring together experts, innovators and policy makers to lead a conversation about driving the capital’s switch to electric vehicles and creating a blueprint for a global “electric city.”

London leads the UK in providing public charging points, with one in four electric vehicles registered in the capital.

However, while London has the highest number of chargers per capita, it is the eighth best UK region or country when it comes to fast (or faster) chargers, with a rate of 9.1 per 100,000 people.

Khan, who has pledged to become a ‘net-zero’ city by 2030, said London was ahead of other European cities in fast chargers nonetheless, and promised more. did.

A contract to install the first 25 super-fast charging points will be put up for tender next week, with a further 75 to follow by the end of April. The goal is to have all 100 units operational by the end of 2023.

Khan would have said:

“As a city, we have traveled an impressive distance in a relatively short period of time in terms of deploying the necessary infrastructure and facilitating the uptake of electric vehicles. Given the severity of the threats we face, we must now redouble our efforts and move further and faster.

“Now it is important not to take your feet off the pedal and lose momentum. Freeing up public land to provide more charging points and charging hubs will meet and hopefully exceed this goal. is essential for.”

Khan’s strategy is to have between 40,000 and 60,000 charging points by 2030, one tenth of which will be fast chargers. Building the network is expected to create 4,500 jobs.

The number of public chargers in London, whether installed on lampposts, on streets or in car parks, has increased by 40% in one year.

Westminster has the most (1,494), while Bexley and Harrow have the least, 46 each.

Other speakers at the Design Museum event included designer Paul Priestman, Uber UK General Manager Andrew Brem, Polestar UK Head Jonathan Goodman and TfL Transport Strategy Director Christina Calderato. was

Mr Khan plans to switch to electric vehicles next time he upgrades his car and wants to make the transition “easier and more convenient for Londoners”.

He sees electric vehicles as an important means of transportation for trips that cannot be walked, cycled or taken on public transport, but by the end of the 2010s, 28% of all car traffic We want to reduce it.

He said London should be “proud” of what it has achieved with electrification.

“One of the great things about our city is the increase in electric vehicles and sales, and [charging] Grid,” he said.

“But we can’t stand still. We need more charging points for electric vehicles. We need faster charging points.”

“Manufacturers who are convinced there is a market for this mean that prices will come down. ”
