Violin from Lord of the Strings: Tolkien movie trilogy up for auction

The violin, which summoned Tolkien’s hobbits on their quest and sounded to protect Rohan from Orc armies, is set to be auctioned next month.

The Hardanger violin, owned and played by former All-Ireland champion fiddler Dermot Crehan, main of the Ring movie trilogy.

Used in the scores of all three films, this sound is especially pronounced in the second track of the first film, The Fellowship of the Ring, 30 Seconds About The Hobbit.

This fiddle is expected to fetch between £3,000 and £6,000 when auctioned by Gardiner Houlgate auctioneers in Corsham. Wiltshire December 9th.

Lord of the Rings composer Howard Shore says Mr Crehan Norwegian The Hardanger violin is now nicknamed the Rohan Fiddle for its pathetic and haunting sound.

Clehan, 68, said:

“I’ve done a little work with it, but I’m basically half-retired and want to pass the fiddle to someone who uses it.

“The best thing for a violin is under someone’s chin, not under the bed.”

Regarding his involvement in the Lord of the Rings films, Clehan said: It was a five-year collaboration and very creative.

“When the project first started, Howard Shore asked me to record music inspired by the word Hobbit.

“I sent him demo recordings of traditional Irish music that he loved.

“Howard was reluctant to use an Irish instrument, so he asked for a Hardanger violin from Norway to give the music a different feel.”

Auctioneer Jamie South, who puts up this fiddle, said: The Lord of the Rings movies and books have aroused great interest among collectors and fans, so we expect interest from around the world. ”

The Lord of the Rings soundtrack was recorded at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios. London And Watford Coliseum. Both Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King won Oscars for highest original score.

Mr Crehan is originally from Dublin and now lives in London. He was named All-Ireland his Champion Fiddler, London Fiddler for the third year in a row.

He was a member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and for 12 years was Vice Principal Violin of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has also worked on numerous film and television scores, including the two Harry Potter films, Legends of the Fall, The Patriot Games, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Cold Feet, Downton Abbey, Shetland, and more. He has recorded with Elton John, Sting, Robbie Williams, Westlife and more.

The Hardanger violin is a traditional Norwegian musical instrument whose headstock usually ends with a carved animal or carved female head. The body of the instrument is richly decorated.
