Which Big Players are Heading to the Premier League?

The Premier League remains Europe’s most exciting and dynamic domestic football competition, which means it also attracts most of the speculation about player transfers.

In fact, a significant amount of the action at sports betting sites like SBK bet on football markets involves betting on big-name signings as teams compete to rival the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool or just to keep up with the competition.

The recent January transfer window was relatively quiet, at least compared to the level of transfer activity we can expect in the summer. There were not a lot of big names moving in and out of the Premier League, although Philippe Coutinho, Kieran Trippier and Aaron Ramsey were significant additions to the Premier League ranks, while Ferran Torres and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang were among the bigger name players to depart UK shores.

With the Premier League title looking likely to end up with Manchester City again, their rivals will be focused on trying to close the gap so we can expect that the summer will be a lot busier than January. So which big players can we expect to arrive in the Premier League in the off season?

Erling Haaland

Arguably the biggest name in world football right now, Erling Haaland’s departure from Borussia Dortmund has been much prophesized but it seems likely it will finally come to pass this summer as the 21-year-old’s contract in Germany comes to an end.

A striker with all the gifts, Haaland has an astonishing record of 56 goals in 57 appearances for the German club and with his best years ahead of him, he is sure to command a huge fee. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are all said to be interested in signing Haaland, but both Manchester United and Manchester City are also in for him, and the chance to try his skills in the most competitive of European domestic leagues could prove irresistible for the young Norwegian.

Lautaro Martinez

Lautaro Martinez was Romelu Lukaku’s partner in crime last year as they tore Serie A apart for Internazionale. Between them, they plundered 41 league goals.Martinez often drops deep into midfield to open space with intricate passes, but he is also able to isolate defenders by feeding off through balls. He is not just a target man but also a creator.

Despite the departure of Lukaku, the Argentine’s good form has continued in the new season as he remains one of the most reliable, selfless and creative attacking players in the league. Not surprisingly, he has been linked to several squads including Arsenal and Tottenham, and the prospect of Chelsea reuniting him with Lukaku will surely have occurred to manager Thomas Tuchel.

The difficulty with Martinez is that he signed a new contract with Inter last autumn, which runs through to 2026, and the club are once again heading for the Serie A title. Still, the challenge of playing in the Premier League may yet tempt him should an English club be prepared to meet the €80+ asking price.

Joao Felix

A supremely gifted young forward, Joao Felix has had a rough time since moving to Atletico Madrid. Injuries have dogged his spell at the club, but the style of football that Diego Simeone demands is also not conducive to getting the best from one of Europe’s most exciting young players.

His goal tally of 15 goals in 73 appearances is a relatively poor return but does not reflect his ability and at the age of 22 he could yet prove to be the star creative force for any of Europe’s top teams for many years to come. The fact that Atletico have been making such a poor effort of defending their league title this season seems to have been the final straw for Felix and it has been widely reported that he wants out, with Premier League clubs Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham all apparently in the market for the Portugal international. All four would offer very different challenges but could offer a welcome escape route from his Spanish struggles, and all would be prepared to pay top dollar for a player with so much upside, despite the fact that his current contract runs to 2026.
