Justice Department begins search for new psychiatric parole board

The Justice Department is appointing a psychiatric commissioner to the Northern Ireland Parole Commission (PCNI.).

PCNI is an independent agency and is important in the process of determining whether offenders eligible for parole can safely reintegrate into society. Public protection is always a top priority, and a solid risk assessment is key to making decisions about potential releases.

The parole commissioner reviews the case papers and gives directions for or against the prisoner’s release. Each completed case attracts a set payout related to the nature of the case. The projected number of cases for each Commissioner over the next few years is 25-35 cases per year, although exact case numbers cannot be guaranteed and may increase or decrease depending on business demands.

The vacancy is in the field of psychiatry and anyone who believes they have the necessary attributes and experience to contribute positively to the work of a parole board is encouraged to apply.

All applicants must meet the following mandatory criteria: analytical thinking; judgment and decision-making; expertise; planning and organization; and communication.

The Commissioner is based in Laganside Court, Belfast.
